How to Prepare for Your Engagement Shoot

Congratulations on your engagement!

This is such an exciting chapter of your love story. Engagement shoots are not only a wonderful way to celebrate your relationship, but they’re also a perfect opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera ahead of your wedding day.

If you're new here and don't know me, Hi! I'm Jade, a wedding photographer based in Devon, UK - and I'm here to help you during this exciting time of being engaged and planning your wedding. You can find more of my blogs and top tips here if you'd like to get any inspiration for your big day.

If you're interest in learning more about my engagement session or how to prepare for one, then please keep reading...

To help you feel confident and prepared, I’ve put together some tips to ensure your engagement shoot is relaxed, enjoyable, and beautifully "you."

1. Choose the Right Location

Your engagement photos should reflect your personality as a couple, so think about places that are meaningful to you. Whether it’s a windswept beach, a woodland trail, a charming city street, or a cozy spot that feels like "home," let’s find a location that tells your story. If you’re not sure, I’m happy to suggest some stunning locations in Devon and the surrounding areas that provide incredible backdrops.

2. Time It Right

The best light for photography is during the "golden hours," shortly after sunrise or before sunset. This soft, warm light creates a romantic and flattering glow. I’ll work with you to schedule your session at the ideal time to make the most of this magical light.

3. Coordinate Your Outfits

Your outfits should reflect your personal style while complementing each other. Opt for neutral tones, soft pastels, or earthy colours that work well with natural backdrops. Avoid bold patterns, logos, or overly bright colours that might distract from your connection. Layers and textured fabrics can add depth to your photos. If you’re unsure, feel free to send me some options beforehand—I’m happy to help! Alternatively, I have a Pinterest board with some ideas that you can view here.

4. Get Comfortable Together

Engagement shoots are all about capturing your love and connection. Don’t worry about stiff poses or forced smiles—I’ll guide you through natural movements and prompts to create authentic, heartfelt moments. Take some time beforehand to think about what makes you both laugh or feel close; little things like sharing an inside joke or reminiscing about a favourite memory can bring out genuine smiles and help you both feel comfortable.

5. Bring Personal Touches

Adding personal details can make your engagement photos even more special. Bring along meaningful items like a bouquet, a picnic setup, a bottle of bubbly, or even your furry friend (yes, dogs are always welcome!). These touches help to tell your unique story and make the session more fun.

6. Pamper Yourself

Feeling your best will help you look your best. Consider booking hair appointments prior to the session so you feel totally fresh and it will help boost your confidence. It’s also a great excuse to treat yourself! If you’re planning a trial run with your wedding makeup artist, this can be the perfect occasion to test your look.

7. Relax and Have Fun

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about being in front of the camera, but don’t worry—I’m here to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free. The most important thing is to focus on each other and enjoy the moment. Your love is what makes these photos special, and my goal is to capture it in the most beautiful, genuine way.

8. Communicate with Me

If you have specific ideas, concerns, or must-have shots in mind, let me know! This is your session, and I want it to reflect your vision. I’m here to answer any questions and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.

9. Trust the Process

Remember, the magic happens when you let go and enjoy the experience. You don’t need to worry about how to pose or where to look—I’ll guide you through everything. Trust me to find the best angles, light, and composition to showcase your love story.
